Port Douglas Attractions at a Glance

The top attractions in and around Port Douglas are Four Mile Beach, Macrossan Street, the marina, the Flagstaff Hill lookout and the Sunday Markets, plus day trips to the Great Barrier Reef, Mossman Gorge and the Daintree Rainforest.

“Port Douglas is a town that was designed — by geography rather than planners,  to be discovered slowly. Every beach, every inlet, every street corner and headland has something worth pausing for. The trick is knowing where to look.”

Port Douglas Attractions — Everything Worth Your Time In The Village In The Tropics

Port Douglas punches above its size when it comes to things to see and places to be. For a town of barely 4,000 people, it has a concentrated quality of experience that surprises visitors who expected a simple resort destination and found something considerably more interesting. Here is what makes Port Douglas worth exploring beyond the obvious.

Four Mile Beach — The Anchor Of Everything

Four Mile Beach is the kind of beach that resets your understanding of what a beach can be. It stretches south from the headland in a near-perfect arc,  golden sand, palm-fringed, with views to the rainforest ranges and the Coral Sea horizon. In the dry season (May to October) it’s safe for swimming and genuinely spectacular at every hour. In the wet, the stinger nets make a section safe. At sunrise, it belongs to you.

Macrossan Street — The Heart Of The Village

Macrossan Street is Port Douglas’s single Main Street,  running from the beach to the Dickson Inlet, lined with restaurants, bars, boutiques, and the particular tropical shade of canopy trees that have been growing for decades. Walking its length at the golden hour is one of the most pleasant experiences in Tropical North Queensland. Do it slowly. Decide where to eat. Repeat the next night.

Flagstaff Hill — The View That Explains Everything

Flagstaff Hill at the northern end of town offers a panorama that genuinely earns the climb: Four Mile Beach to the south, the Coral Sea to the east, the Daintree ranges rising beyond the inlet, and the town nestled in the green between all of it. This is the view that explains why Port Douglas exists where it does. Visit at sunset and you’ll understand why people never quite want to leave.

Dickson Inlet — Where The Town Meets The Tidal World

The Dickson Inlet wraps around the southern and western edge of town,  a tidal inlet fringed with mangroves where saltwater crocodiles warm themselves on the banks in the early morning, ibis stalk the shallows, and the light on the water changes by the minute. The boardwalk along the inlet’s edge is one of the finest free walks in the region.

Anzac Park And The Sunday Markets

Anzac Park sits at the northern end of Macrossan Street and is the social centre of town on Sunday mornings, when the Port Douglas Markets fill the space with fresh produce, handmade crafts, local food, and community. On non-market days, the park is a shaded, peaceful place with views across the inlet, and the starting point for the walk around the inlet boardwalk.

St Mary’s By The Sea — A Chapel In A Garden

St Mary’s by the Sea is one of the most charming small buildings in Tropical North Queensland,  a simple white timber chapel set in a garden above the Dickson Inlet. Built in 1911, it has been the venue for countless weddings and is a quiet, genuinely beautiful place to spend ten minutes in the shade with a view of the water.

Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina — The Other Side Of The Reef

The Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina is where the reef tours depart each morning, and it is also one of Port Douglas’s most pleasant places to be at any other time. The waterfront restaurants and bars, the superyachts at berth, and the view out across the inlet and beyond make the marina worth visiting even when you’re not taking a tour.

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Port Douglas, we gently ask you to:

  • Protect the reef — wear reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral.
  • Respect the wildlife — admire the birds, turtles and rainforest creatures from a distance, and take your rubbish home with you.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful town thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
