Great Barrier Reef from Port Douglas at a Glance

Port Douglas is one of the closest mainland towns to the outer Great Barrier Reef. Reef boats leave daily from the marina for Agincourt Reef, Opal Reef and Mackay Coral Cay, around 90 minutes away, or for the Low Isles, about 45 minutes away. Choose a tour for snorkelling, scuba diving or a relaxed day on a coral cay.

“The Great Barrier Reef is not a backdrop. It is a living world — 2,300 kilometres of coral, fish, turtle, ray and reef shark, and Port Douglas is its most intimate gateway.”

The Great Barrier Reef,  The World’s Greatest Living Structure, Right On Your Doorstep

Port Douglas sits closer to the Outer Great Barrier Reef than any other mainland town in Australia. From the Crystalbrook Marina, the reef boats cross to Agincourt Reef, Opal Reef, and Mackay Coral Cay in around 90 minutes,  and what awaits on arrival is, by any measure, one of the most extraordinary natural experiences on Earth. Coral gardens of impossible colour. Sea turtles moving unhurriedly through the water. Clownfish in anemones. Giant clams. Reef sharks. The reef is alive in a way that photographs and films simply cannot capture,   you have to be in the water to understand it.

Choosing Your Reef Experience

Port Douglas reef tours are not all the same, and choosing the right one makes an enormous difference to your day. The key distinction is between the Low Isles,  a pair of coral cays 15 kilometres offshore, shallow, calm, and perfect for families or first-time snorkellers, and the Outer Reef, where the reef drops away sharply, the coral formations are dramatic, and the marine life is abundant in ways that the inner reef cannot match.

Both are extraordinary. The right choice depends on who you are and what you’re looking for. Our Low Isles vs Outer Reef guide will help you decide.

The Outer Reef — Agincourt, Opal, And The Coral Sea

The reef platforms of the Outer Barrier Reef,  in particular, Agincourt Reef’s series of ribbon reefs,  are accessible from Port Douglas in a way they are not from anywhere else on the coast. The ribbon reefs run north-south along the continental shelf, and the visibility in these waters is extraordinary: 20 to 30 metres on a clear day. Snorkelling here is a different experience from the inner reef,  more colour, more depth, more life.

For certified scuba divers, this is one of the finest dive destinations in the world. For first-timers, the reef tour operators offer introductory scuba experiences led by qualified dive instructors, in calm, supervised conditions.

Travel Kindly

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Port Douglas, we gently ask you to:

  • Protect the reef — wear reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral.
  • Respect the wildlife — admire the birds, turtles and rainforest creatures from a distance, and take your rubbish home with you.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful town thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
  • Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.

Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
