Julatten at a Glance

Julatten is a small farming district in the hills about 35 kilometres from Port Douglas, reached via the Rex Range Road. It is cooler than the coast and known for outstanding birdwatching, with rainforest walks and nature lodges.

“The road climbs out of the lowlands into a different kind of landscape — cooler air, misty mornings, farms folded into the hills and a birdlife that is genuinely extraordinary. Julatten is Far North Queensland’s quiet surprise.”

Julatten — Birdwatching, Rainforest and the Tablelands on Port Douglas’s Doorstep

Julatten sits in the upland country between Port Douglas and the Atherton Tablelands, about 35 kilometres from Port Douglas via the winding Rex Range Road. It’s a small farming district — sugarcane, avocados, exotic fruit — tucked into a transition zone between the coastal lowlands and the higher, cooler country of the McAllister Range. For visitors from Port Douglas, Julatten offers a completely different environment in under an hour’s drive: lower humidity, misty mornings, and one of the most remarkable birdwatching areas in Australia.

A Birdwatcher’s Destination

Julatten is regarded as one of Australia’s top birdwatching locations. The Kingfisher Park Birdwatchers Lodge has been attracting serious birders from around the world for decades, providing a base in the midst of lowland rainforest and rural vegetation that supports a staggering diversity of species. Buff-breasted paradise-kingfishers, golden bowerbirds, pied monarchs, tooth-billed bowerbirds, double-eyed fig-parrots and the Southern cassowary are among the species recorded here. Even for visitors who are not dedicated birders, the birdlife at Julatten is an eye-opening introduction to the extraordinary biodiversity of Far North Queensland.

The Landscape and the Drive

The Rex Range Road from Port Douglas to Julatten is one of the more scenic drives in the region — climbing steadily through forest and farmland with views back toward the coast. The village of Julatten itself is small, with a general store and little else in the way of facilities. Most visitors come for the birdwatching and the surrounding rural character rather than a town centre experience. The road also connects to the Atherton Tablelands if you want to continue further inland, opening up a full day loop from Port Douglas that combines coastal, upland and rainforest environments.

Travel Kindly

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Port Douglas, we gently ask you to:

  • Protect the rainforest — stay on marked tracks, never feed wildlife (including cassowaries) and take your rubbish with you.
  • Respect the wildlife — admire the birds, turtles and rainforest creatures from a distance, and take your rubbish home with you.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful town thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
  • Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.

Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
