Port Douglas Events at a Glance
Port Douglas has a busy events calendar for a town of fewer than 4,000 people, with food and wine festivals, sporting and charity events, and the weekly Sunday Markets at Anzac Park. This guide lists the main events and when they happen, so you can plan your visit around them.
“A Port Douglas event is not something you attend. It is something you find yourself inside of — because in a town this size, the festival and the town are the same thing, and everyone who is there is part of it.”
Port Douglas Events — When The Town Comes Alive
Port Douglas has a cultural calendar that belies its size. For a town of fewer than 4,000 people, the events that happen here — and the way the town throws itself into them — create an atmosphere that draws visitors from across Australia and overseas each year. Here’s what’s worth knowing about.
Port Douglas Carnivale — The Town’s Signature Event
The Port Douglas Carnivale is held annually over ten days, typically in late May, and it transforms the town. Street parades, live music, the iconic Longest Lunch on Macrossan Street, culinary events, and the particular festive spirit that happens when an entire small town decides to celebrate together. This is Port Douglas at its most exuberant. If you can time your visit to coincide, do it.
Port Douglas Race Week — Sailors And Spectators
Port Douglas Race Week is a sailing regatta set against one of the finest natural backdrops in Australia — the Coral Sea, with the Daintree ranges visible beyond. Competitors from across Australia and internationally gather to race in the waters off Port Douglas. For non-sailors, the social scene around the marina during Race Week is its own event — the restaurants and bars are lively, the atmosphere is festive, and the sunsets are spectacular.
The Sunday Markets — Every Week, All Year
The Port Douglas Markets are held every Sunday morning at Anzac Park — a weekly event that is as much a community ritual as a market. Fresh produce, handmade goods, local food, live music, and the unhurried morning atmosphere that Port Douglas does so well. This is the event that repeats every week and never loses its appeal.
Christmas And Easter In Port Douglas
Christmas in Port Douglas has its own flavour — warm evenings, outdoor dining, the lights of the marina reflected in the Coral Sea, and the particular joy of a tropical Christmas. Easter brings school holiday visitors and a series of local events to the town. Both are excellent times to visit if you don’t mind company.
