Introductory Scuba Diving at a Glance

You do not need a dive certificate to scuba dive on the Great Barrier Reef. An introductory dive, sometimes called a resort dive, is done under the direct supervision of a qualified instructor after a short briefing and a medical questionnaire. Outer reef tours from Port Douglas offer introductory dives as an add-on to your day.

“You don’t need a certification to go deeper. An introductory dive gives you the experience of diving alongside a qualified instructor, touching real coral reef depth for the first time — no certificate required.”

Introductory Scuba Diving at the Great Barrier Reef — No Certification Needed

Introductory scuba diving — sometimes called a resort dive or discover scuba experience — allows uncertified divers to experience scuba diving under the direct supervision of a qualified instructor. It’s the simplest, safest way to go below the surface at the Great Barrier Reef without completing a full certification course first. Most outer reef tour operators from Port Douglas offer introductory dives as part of or as an add-on to their standard reef day package.

How It Works

Before entering the water, you’ll receive a comprehensive safety briefing covering the basics of scuba equipment, equalisation (clearing your ears as you descend), hand signals, buoyancy control and how to communicate with your instructor underwater. This typically takes around 30 minutes. You’ll then enter the water with your instructor, descend to a depth of approximately 8–12 metres (within the safe limit for introductory dives), and spend 20–30 minutes exploring the reef under direct one-on-one supervision. Instructors control the pace and manage your buoyancy if needed — your job is simply to breathe, look around and enjoy.

Who Introductory Diving Is For

Introductory diving is available to most healthy adults and children over 10 years old. You don’t need to be a strong swimmer, but a basic level of comfort in the water is recommended. If you have any significant medical conditions — particularly cardiovascular or respiratory conditions — consult your doctor and inform your operator before booking. The operator will conduct a standard medical screening questionnaire as part of the booking process. People with a fear of confined spaces or water can sometimes manage introductory diving with the right instructor, but it’s worth being honest with your operator about your comfort level in advance.

Travel Kindly

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Port Douglas, we gently ask you to:

  • Protect the reef — wear reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral.
  • Respect the wildlife — admire the birds, turtles and rainforest creatures from a distance, and take your rubbish home with you.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful town thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
  • Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.

Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
