Low Isles at a Glance

The Low Isles are two coral cays about 15 kilometres off Port Douglas, around 45 minutes away by sailing catamaran. They offer calm, sheltered snorkelling from the beach, sea turtles and a historic lighthouse built in 1878. It is an ideal reef day for families and first-time snorkellers.

“The boat slows and the lighthouse appears above the trees, a white column rising from the coral cay, just as it has since 1878. The Low Isles have been watching over these waters for a very long time.”

Low Isles — A Coral Cay Day Trip from Port Douglas

The Low Isles are a pair of coral cays about 15 kilometres offshore from Port Douglas, close enough to see clearly from the beach on a calm day, and reachable in around 45 minutes by sailing catamaran. Unlike the outer ribbon reefs, the Low Isles offer a sheltered, calm-water reef experience suited to families, snorkellers of all abilities, and those who want to spend time both in and out of the water without a long offshore crossing. The larger cay is topped with a working lighthouse, established in 1878 and heritage-listed today.

The Reef Around the Isles

The fringing reef around the Low Isles is home to a rich variety of marine life,  corals, reef fish, sea turtles, rays and the occasional reef shark. The snorkelling is accessible and excellent, with shallow areas suitable for children and deeper sections that reward more experienced snorkellers. Turtles are frequently encountered at the Low Isles and are one of the reasons the experience here is so beloved. Glass-bottom boat tours operate for those who prefer to stay dry, while reef walks at low tide allow visitors to explore the exposed coral rubble zone.

The Lighthouse Cay

The main cay at the Low Isles is covered in dense pisonia forest and circled by a fringing reef of its own. The lighthouse — one of the oldest navigational aids in Far North Queensland — stands at the cay’s highest point. Tours to the isles typically include a guided walk to the lighthouse, with rangers or guides explaining the ecology of the cay and its history. The combination of tropical forest, coral reef, heritage structure and turquoise water creates a setting that is both photogenic and genuinely moving.

Travel Kindly

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Port Douglas, we gently ask you to:

  • Protect the reef — wear reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral.
  • Respect the wildlife — admire the birds, turtles and rainforest creatures from a distance, and take your rubbish home with you.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful town thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
  • Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.

Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
