“Dinner in Port Douglas is the reward for a big day on the reef or in the rainforest. The restaurants here are small enough to know you by the end of the night. The food is good enough to justify coming back.”

Port Douglas Restaurants — Dining Well in the Tropics

Port Douglas has a restaurant scene that reflects its character: independent, high-quality and slightly tropical in everything — the menus, the outdoor seating, the way the evening opens up as the heat drops and the stars appear over the Coral Sea. There are no chain restaurants here. What you’ll find instead are owner-operated establishments with genuine investment in their food and their guests, many of them in business for years and well-known by return visitors.

What to Expect

Port Douglas restaurants tend toward fresh seafood, Australian produce and pan-Asian influences, a reflection of the Far North Queensland context and the multicultural backgrounds of chefs who have chosen this corner of Australia to build their careers. The coral trout, barramundi and prawns are local and frequently exceptional. Mango, tropical fruit and Far North Queensland-grown produce feature heavily in summer menus. Dining is almost always at least partly outdoors,  either garden restaurants, wide verandahs or rooftop settings where the evening breeze makes the heat entirely bearable.

Restaurants by Character

The marina precinct,  including Hemingways Brewery, the Sugar Wharf restaurants and the waterfront venued,  provides the most dramatic settings, with water views and the activity of the marina as a backdrop. Macrossan Street and the streets immediately off it hold a range of smaller, more intimate restaurants suited to couples or small groups. Several venues are open for both lunch and dinner; others are dinner-only. Reservations are recommended for dinner during peak season (June–September) and at Christmas. Travel Kindly

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Port Douglas, we gently ask you to:

  • Respect the wildlife — admire the birds, turtles and rainforest creatures from a distance, and take your rubbish home with you.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful town thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
  • Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.

Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
