Opal Reef at a Glance
Opal Reef is an outer ribbon reef off Port Douglas, on the edge of the continental shelf. Deep, clear water and dense coral make it a favourite for snorkelling and scuba diving, and it is visited by day tours departing from the Port Douglas marina.
“The reef comes up fast from deep water. One moment you’re looking into blue, the next there’s a cathedral of coral beneath you — branching staghorn, massive bommies, fish moving through in curtains of silver and gold.”
Opal Reef — Port Douglas’s Outer Reef Gem
Opal Reef is one of the outer ribbon reefs of the Great Barrier Reef, situated offshore from Port Douglas in the Coral Sea. Like Agincourt Reef, it sits on the edge where the continental shelf drops away — creating the clear, deep-water conditions that produce some of the most spectacular coral and marine life encounters on the entire reef system. Opal Reef is served by a pontoon operation allowing visitors to snorkel, dive and explore without time constraints.

Which Great Barrier Reef Tour?
Low Isles or outer reef: find the right trip for you.

Coral, Fish and Open Water
The reef at Opal is defined by strong coral growth and impressive fish diversity. Hard and soft corals form intricate structures across the reef table and down its walls, supporting populations of clownfish, parrotfish, wrasse, butterflyfish and the larger species — reef sharks, sea turtles, eagle rays and giant grouper — that make outer reef dives particularly memorable. Snorkelling conditions are typically excellent, with high visibility and warm water year-round. The protected lagoon side of the reef provides calmer conditions for beginners and children.
