Snorkelling at a Glance
Snorkelling is the easiest way to see the Great Barrier Reef, and you do not need to be a strong swimmer. Tours from Port Douglas visit the outer reef at Agincourt and Opal Reef or the calm, shallow Low Isles, and supply masks, snorkels, flotation aids and stinger suits.
“You don’t need to be a strong swimmer to have a profound reef experience. A mask, a snorkel, and enough courage to put your face in the water — that’s the threshold. What’s on the other side is worth every bit of it.”
Snorkelling at the Great Barrier Reef — Port Douglas’s Greatest Day Out
Snorkelling is the most accessible way to experience the Great Barrier Reef, and from Port Douglas the conditions for it are exceptional. Whether you’re at the outer ribbon reefs of Agincourt and Opal, floating above the coral gardens of Low Isles, or exploring the shallows of Mackay Coral Cay, the reef off Port Douglas offers snorkelling experiences that range from beginner-friendly to seriously rewarding for experienced swimmers.
What to Expect
All reef tour operators from Port Douglas provide snorkel equipment as part of their tour inclusion. A guided snorkel tour is typically offered at the beginning of the reef day — an instructor leads a small group through the reef, pointing out highlights and helping new snorkellers with technique and buoyancy. After the guided tour, independent snorkelling continues for the rest of the day within the designated safety areas. Water temperatures at the reef are warm year-round (23–28°C), and visibility at the outer reef regularly exceeds 20 metres. The marine life encountered — sea turtles, reef fish, manta rays, reef sharks, giant clams — makes even a first snorkelling experience genuinely extraordinary.
Tips for Better Snorkelling
Practise your breathing before you get in — slow, controlled breaths through the mouthpiece and out through the nose. Fins help with propulsion and keeping you horizontal; use them in long, slow strokes rather than a bicycle kick. Flotation noodles or vests are available from operators and are strongly recommended for non-swimmers or anxious first-timers. Don’t touch the coral — even a gentle contact damages it. Stay calm, breathe slowly, and let the reef come to you rather than chasing it. Most first-time snorkellers are surprised by how quickly they forget they’re at the surface.

Not a Swimmer? Options Still Available

Travel Kindly
At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Port Douglas, we gently ask you to:
- Protect the reef — wear reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral.
- Respect the wildlife — admire the birds, turtles and rainforest creatures from a distance, and take your rubbish home with you.
- Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful town thrive.
- Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
- Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.
Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
