Bus Service Between Cairns and Port Douglas

A regular coach and bus service operates between Cairns and Port Douglas, making it easy to reach the town from Cairns Airport or the Cairns city centre without a hire car. The journey follows the spectacular Captain Cook Highway along the coast and takes approximately 90 minutes. Services typically run multiple times daily in both directions, with stops including Palm Cove and other northern beaches communities along the way. Fares are reasonable, and the service is popular with both locals and visitors.

Getting Around Town

Within Port Douglas itself, the town is genuinely walkable for most visitors. Macrossan Street — the heart of the dining and shopping precinct — runs directly from the foreshore to the main road, and Four Mile Beach is a short walk from the centre of town. For those staying at resorts a little further from the main strip, many properties offer shuttle services into town. Taxis and rideshare options are also available for those who prefer door-to-door transport.

Planning Day Trips

For day trips to the Daintree Rainforest, Cape Tribulation, or Mossman Gorge, most tour operators include hotel pickup and return in their itineraries. If you prefer to explore independently, a hire car is the most flexible option and allows you to travel at your own pace, stopping at the lookouts and viewpoints along the Captain Cook Highway that make the journey as memorable as the destination.

A Hot Getaways destination. Where Care is Our Compass.

Travel Kindly

At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Port Douglas, we gently ask you to:

  • Protect the reef — wear reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral.
  • Respect the wildlife — admire the birds, turtles and rainforest creatures from a distance, and take your rubbish home with you.
  • Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful town thrive.
  • Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
  • Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.

Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
