Port Douglas Seasons at a Glance
Port Douglas has two seasons, not four. The dry season, May to October, brings sunny days, low humidity and settled weather. The wet season, November to April, is hot and humid with afternoon storms and heavy rain, and the landscape is at its greenest.
“Two seasons. Two completely different Port Douglases. Neither one is wrong, they just ask different things of you.”
Port Douglas Seasons — Understanding the Tropical Year
Far North Queensland doesn’t divide neatly into four seasons the way the rest of Australia does. Port Douglas has two, the wet season and the dry season, with shoulder transitions in between that are worth understanding in their own right. Each season has genuine character and genuine rewards.
Dry Season — May to October
The dry season brings southeast trade winds, clear skies, low humidity and comfortable daytime temperatures in the mid-to-high 20s. The reef is at its most accessible and most visually dramatic — visibility exceeds 20 metres on the outer reef and marine stingers are absent from the water. The rainforest is lush and green but the waterfalls are quieter. This is the peak tourist period; visitor numbers are highest from June through September and accommodation books out well in advance. June through August offers the best combination of weather and relative calm before the September–October surge. Visit our Winter in Port Douglas and Spring in Port Douglas pages for more detail.
Wet Season — November to April
The wet season is characterised by high temperatures (30s daily), intense afternoon and evening storms, high humidity and extraordinary lushness across the landscape. The Daintree is at its most spectacular. Waterfalls run full. Tropical fruit is in season. The coast and the rivers are alive in ways they’re not in the dry. The trade-offs are real: marine stingers are present, cyclone risk exists from December to April, and sea conditions are less predictable. But the wet season also brings lower visitor numbers, lower prices and a Port Douglas that belongs more completely to the locals. Shoulder Months — The Best-Kept Secrets
May and October sit between the seasons and deserve special mention. May sees the humidity dropping, the skies clearing and the landscape still brilliantly green from the wet. October brings the anticipation of the coming wet, with occasional storms and a warmth that feels more intense than mid-dry. Both months have lower visitor numbers than peak season and good conditions for most activities. For more detail, see our full Port Douglas Weather guide or our Best Time to Visit Port Douglas page. Travel Kindly
At Hot Getaways, care is our compass — and a little kindness makes every journey better. When you visit Port Douglas, we gently ask you to:
- Protect the reef — wear reef-safe sunscreen and never touch or stand on the coral.
- Respect the wildlife — admire the birds, turtles and rainforest creatures from a distance, and take your rubbish home with you.
- Support local — choosing local operators, cafés and guides helps this beautiful town thrive.
- Honour Country — we travel on the traditional lands and sea Country of Australia’s First Peoples, with gratitude and respect to the Traditional Custodians past and present.
- Be kind to each other — a smile, a little patience and a helping hand make the day lovelier for everyone.
Small acts of care add up to something wonderful. Thank you for travelling kindly.
